Driving Tivat to Podgorica: the Coast-to-Capital Route
Tivat to Podgorica is a straightforward 90 km, roughly 90-minute drive that trades the Bay of Kotor for Montenegro's capital, and doing it in your own rental is the easy way to control the day. The road hugs the water before the Sozina tunnel cuts through the hills and drops you toward the plain around the capital. The route: bay, tunnel and inland run
From Tivat you skirt the bay and pick up the main road heading inland, the reverse of the classic capital-to-coast drive. After the tunnel the landscape opens out and the last stretch runs flat and fast toward Podgorica. It is one of the more relaxed drives in the country, mostly dual-purpose main road with clear signposting for the capital.
Timing and when to leave
Plan on about 90 minutes door to door, a little more if you stop for photos over the bay. Summer mornings can bunch up around Tivat as beach traffic wakes, so an early start keeps the coast section clean. The inland leg after Sozina rarely snarls, which makes the arrival time into the capital easy to predict, and an hour and a half of steady main road sits comfortably in a VW Golf rental, compact enough for the bay corners and settled once the road opens out. If you are catching an onward connection from the capital's airport, add a small buffer for town traffic on the final approach.
What to see and where to stop
The first half is the scenic half, with the bay on your shoulder before the road turns uphill. Many drivers pause near the water for a coffee and a last look at the coast before committing to the tunnel. Once through Sozina the scenery shifts to open plain and vineyards, a quieter kind of pretty. There is little reason to detour, but a short stop at a roadside konoba on the inland side is a pleasant way to break the run before you reach the interior.
Self-drive versus a transfer
A private transfer will do this route, but it ties you to one pickup time and one drop point, and the meter runs whether you stop or not. With your own car you leave when you land, detour for that bay photo, and carry luggage without watching a clock. For a group or a family the rental usually costs less than paying per seat, and it leaves you mobile once you reach the capital instead of stranded at a hotel door.
