Car Rental in Podgorica

Montenegro's capital, gateway to Ostrog, Lake Skadar, Durmitor and the rest of the country by car

Picking up in Podgorica

Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro — population around 190,000 — and the country's main transport hub. Most international flights to Montenegro land at Podgorica Airport (TGD), 11 km south of the city centre. We arrange pickup either at the airport or directly in town, including city-centre hotels.

Podgorica is a working city rather than a tourist town, which keeps prices sensible and the roads uncluttered outside rush hour. It's also the best starting point for exploring Montenegro's interior, Kolašin, Durmitor, Plav and Prokletije are all quicker from here than from the coast.

What to see in the city

Most visitors use Podgorica as a base rather than a destination, but a half-day in town is worthwhile. The Old Bridge (Stari Most) and the Ribnica River ruins sit at the edge of the Old Town. The Millennium Bridge (2005) is the modern symbol of the city. Skaline, a small waterfall on the Cijevna river 5 km outside town, is a favourite local picnic spot.

For a meal, our Podgorica food guide covers the Green Market, the dish invented here (Popeci), and the restaurants worth an evening out.

Where the capital reaches

The advantage of renting here is access to places that are difficult from anywhere else. Ostrog Monastery is an hour north. Lake Skadar is half an hour south. Cetinje, the old royal capital, is 45 minutes west. The Morača Canyon starts at the city's northern edge.

For longer day trips, our Tara Canyon guide covers Europe's deepest gorge three hours north, and Shkodër, Albania is 75 minutes south-east if you fancy a border crossing for the day.

Driving in Podgorica

Central Podgorica is easy to drive — wide boulevards, sensible signage, limited one-way systems. Parking in the centre is metered in zones. Most large hotels have their own car parks; the Mall of Montenegro and Delta City have free shopping parking within walking distance of the centre.

Traffic peaks 07:30-09:00 and 16:00-18:00 on weekdays. Weekend mornings are quiet. Fuel stations are plentiful and often cheaper than the coast.

Cross-border from Podgorica

Four international borders are reachable within a couple of hours: Albania (Božaj, 40 minutes), Serbia (Dobrakovo or Ranče, 2-3 hours), Bosnia and Herzegovina (multiple crossings, 2 hours to Trebinje), and Kosovo (Kula, about 3 hours). We include cross-border insurance in all our rentals — tell us at booking which countries you plan to cross.
