Every car you book through this site comes with cover already built in, so you are never driving uninsured on Montenegro's roads. What varies is how much of the risk still sits with you: the excess you would pay after a claim, and the deposit held on your card at pickup. This page walks through what is included as standard, the upgrades you can add to bring that excess down, and how the deposit is placed and released. Read it before you collect the keys so nothing at the counter takes you by surprise.
What's included as standard
Standard rates include third-party liability, which covers damage you might cause to other people, their vehicles and their property while driving in Montenegro. Collision cover starts at the paid Basic tier and is chosen at booking, not added automatically; theft protection is a separate option available on some cars. Where they apply, an excess still stands. That excess is the capped amount you remain responsible for if something goes wrong, and it is the figure most drivers choose to reduce. The exact excess and what each rate includes are shown when you search, so you can compare cars side by side before you commit.
Optional cover tiers you can add
At the point of booking you can move up from the basic package to a higher tier that lowers your excess, and Full or Full Plus style options can bring it down to nothing. Add-ons such as personal accident cover for you and your passengers, plus tyre and glass protection for the parts standard policies often leave out, are offered alongside the main tiers. Choosing a higher tier upfront is usually cheaper and calmer than arguing over damage at the return desk. You can review and select these upgrades while you complete the booking, with the price for each shown before you confirm.
How the deposit works
A refundable deposit, sometimes called a security hold or blocked amount, is placed on a credit card in the main driver's name when you pick the car up. The card must belong to the driver, carry enough available balance for the hold, and generally needs to be a credit rather than a debit card. The money is not spent; it is ring-fenced and released after you return the car undamaged, though your bank can take a few days to lift the block. The deposit amount depends on the car and the cover you chose, and it is confirmed at checkout rather than fixed here.
Zero-deposit options
If you would rather not have a large sum blocked during the trip, look for the zero-deposit or deposit-free rates when you search. The top Full Plus tier is the one that removes the hold entirely, as the higher cover you pay for upfront replaces it; the lower tiers still hold a deposit. This suits drivers who are close to a card limit, travelling on a tight balance, or who simply prefer not to wait for a refund afterwards. Whether a given car offers a deposit-free rate is flagged during booking, so you can filter for it before you choose.
Cross-border cover
Montenegro is small and neighbouring countries are an easy drive, but taking a hire car across a border is never automatic. You need the supplier's written permission in advance, and some rates carry an extra cross-border fee or exclude certain countries entirely. Just as importantly, your insurance and roadside assistance may be limited or void outside Montenegro unless the trip was declared and approved. Read our border crossing guide before planning any trip into Croatia, Bosnia, Albania or Serbia so your cover travels with you.
Tips before you sign
Photograph the car from every angle at pickup, including the roof, wheels and existing scratches, and make sure any marks are noted on the paperwork before you drive off. Check that the tank policy, mileage terms and the driver named on the agreement all match what you booked, since a mismatch can complicate a later claim. Keep your rental documents and the emergency assistance number to hand in the glovebox rather than buried in an inbox. If anything on the contract differs from what you saw when you booked, ask the supplier and get the answer in writing before you sign.
