Driving from Podgorica to Ulcinj
The drive from Podgorica to Ulcinj runs about 75 km south to the far corner of the Montenegrin coast, and in a car it takes roughly an hour and fifteen minutes door to door. You leave the capital, slip through the Sozina tunnel that saves you the long mountain climb, drop down past Bar, then follow the coast road the rest of the way to Ulcinj. There is no border on this trip, so it is one straight run through the country. The route: Sozina tunnel, Bar, then the coast
From Podgorica you head south on the E80 toward the sea, and the key shortcut is the Sozina tunnel, a long bore that cuts under the mountains and drops you close to Sutomore and Bar. Skipping the old serpentine pass over Sozina saves real time and a lot of steering. Once you reach Bar you pick up the coast road heading south, hugging the shoreline through Dobra Voda and past the olive groves until Ulcinj comes into view. Timing and when to leave
Reckon on 1h15 for the 75 km in normal conditions, a little more if you stop. The Sozina tunnel keeps the drive quick year round, but in July and August the stretch between Bar and Ulcinj fills with beach traffic, so an early start pays off. If you are flying in, the same road works from either airport, and many people time the drive so they reach Ulcinj before the midday heat. Leave the capital by mid-morning and you will have the afternoon free on the sand.
What to see: Long Beach and Ada Bojana
Ulcinj is the payoff at the end of this drive, with the old town perched above the sea and two beaches that are worth the trip on their own. Velika Plaza, the Long Beach, stretches for around twelve kilometres of shallow warm water, ideal for families and kitesurfers alike. A little further on, where the Bojana river meets the sea, Ada Bojana is a sandy island fringed with fish restaurants built out over the water. Self-drive versus a transfer
A private transfer to Ulcinj will get you there, but it drops you once and leaves, and the far coast is exactly where you want wheels.
