Podgorica to Kotor by Car
The drive from Podgorica to Kotor is one of the most rewarding short trips in Montenegro, roughly 85 km that unfolds in about 75 to 90 minutes and ends with the Bay of Kotor opening up in front of you. You leave the capital heading west on the E80, slip through the Sozina tunnel toward the coast, then wind down to the water and the walled UNESCO old town. It is an easy self-drive: no border to cross, good main roads most of the way, and a car of your own means you stop for the photos, the coffee and the viewpoints instead of watching them slide past a bus window. The fast route: E80 and the Sozina tunnel
The direct way runs west out of Podgorica on the E80, then joins the E65/E80 corridor that carries you through the Sozina tunnel, the long bore that saves you the old climb over the mountains. From there the road drops toward the coast and swings into the Bay of Kotor, hugging the shoreline for the last stretch into town. Expect 75 to 90 minutes door to door in normal traffic, a little longer in July and August when the bayside road near Kotor bunches up. It is a straightforward drive on well-surfaced roads, comfortable for a first-timer in a rental car.
The scenic alternative over Lovcen
If you have time and a head for heights, the old serpentine road over Lovcen trades speed for drama. It climbs high above the bay in a stack of tight hairpins that a VW Polo rental threads far more easily than a wide estate, and near the top you get the classic aerial view of Kotor's fjord-like inlet folded far below. It is much slower than the tunnel route, single lane in places and best driven in daylight and dry weather, so treat it as the journey rather than the shortcut. Plenty of drivers take the fast E80 one way and save Lovcen for the return so they see both faces of this stretch of Montenegro.
Self-drive versus a transfer
A booked transfer drops you at your hotel and nothing more; a rental turns the whole day into yours. With your own car you can pause at a bay viewpoint, detour to Perast, or push on to a beach after you have walked the old town, none of which a fixed transfer allows.
