The route and how long it takes
From Podgorica you head south and duck through the Sozina tunnel, which cuts straight under the mountains and spares you a long climb over the old pass. From there the road meets the coast and then traces the Bay of Kotor westward toward Herceg Novi, sitting at the bay's mouth. What to see and where to stop
The stretch along the water is the real reason to drive this yourself, because the bay opens up in view after view as you go. Pull in for a coffee at one of the small waterside towns, or stop where the road gives a clean look back across the water to the mountains behind. Herceg Novi itself rewards a slow arrival, with its old town steps, sea fort and long seafront promenade. Give yourself an unhurried afternoon rather than treating the town as just an end point, and the rest of the country stays within easy reach for the days after.
Self-drive versus a transfer
A private transfer will get you there, but it leaves you without wheels once you arrive, and Herceg Novi and the western bay are made for pottering about by car. With your own vehicle you can carry on to Rose, Zelenika or the beaches along the coast whenever the mood takes you, then come back for dinner in town.
