Driving Podgorica to Budva: The Fast Route to the Riviera

The route: E80 west, then down to the coast
From Podgorica you follow the E80 dual carriageway heading west out of the city, a fast and modern stretch that covers the first half of the trip. It links onto the E65, which carries you over the ridge separating the interior from the riviera and then winds down toward the water. The final descent into Budva is a proper coastal road with a few bends, so ease off the accelerator and enjoy the sea coming into view. None of it demands a big engine, and a Toyota Yaris rental will take the motorway miles and the coastal bends in its stride. Set your pin for the Budva old town or your apartment before you pull away and the whole thing is close to impossible to get wrong.

Where to stop along the way
This is a short hop, so you do not need a break, but a couple of detours reward the curious. Lake Skadar sits just off the western side of the route if you fancy a quick photo of the wetlands and the old stone bridges. Closer to the coast you can peel off toward the viewpoints above the riviera, where the whole sweep of Budva and its islands lays out below you. Because you are self-driving you can take these on a whim rather than sticking to someone else's schedule.
Self-drive versus a transfer
A private transfer will get you from Podgorica to Budva, but it drops you and leaves, and then you are stuck relying on taxis for every beach, restaurant and day trip after that. With your own car parked outside, Sveti Stefan, Kotor and the Budva nightlife strip are all yours to reach on your own terms. No border, no paperwork
The good news on this run is that Podgorica to Budva stays entirely inside Montenegro, so there is no frontier to cross and no extra documents to carry.
